The breakaway region of Transnistria is in a severe economic crisis, with no money for pensions and late salaries. Economic relations with Russia have deteriorated and the EU absorbs most of the country's exports. The separatist regime has put in place a "special economic crisis regime", explaining the situation by limited gas supplies and falling revenues. Tiraspol has appealed to Russia for financial aid, but to no avail, and the local oligarch has personally intervened to shore up the budget. Chisinau plans to disconnect from the separatist regime, and the situation in Transnistria will continue to worsen.
