The remarkable light show was triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the Sun late Saturday evening, reaching Earth between Monday and early Tuesday morning. The Met Office had previously indicated that the resulting geomagnetic activity could extend the visibility of the aurora further south than usual, given the dark and clear sky.
