The federal court in San Francisco validated on Monday a $1.5 billion settlement in which the artificial intelligence company Anthropic resolves a class action lawsuit filed by authors, who accused the unauthorized use of their books to train the chatbot Claude. This case is considered the first major lawsuit in the U.S. regarding the use of protected works in the development of AI systems, having significant implications for copyright.
In a decision from June 2025, the court established that the use of protected works falls under the principle of 'fair use', but concluded that Anthropic violated the law by storing over seven million pirated books. Although most claims for damages were accepted, some authors criticized the value of the compensations, considering it insufficient. Others chose not to participate in the settlement and continue separate lawsuits, which could influence future judicial decisions related to the use of protected content in AI.
