The APIG Federation, which brings together approximately 300 publications from France, has criticized Google for launching the AI Overviews and AI Mode tools before opening negotiations, considering this action unfair. Publishers argue that Google violates the French law from 2019, which conditions the use of press content on obtaining prior authorization and granting compensation.

The new tools, launched on July 22, allow users to interact with artificial intelligence to search for content, but risk significantly reducing digital traffic. In the countries where they have already been implemented, the traffic loss is estimated between 33% and 38%.

Publishers, already affected by declining advertising revenues, are calling for negotiations with Google to ensure fair compensation for the content used. APIG emphasizes that it is open to negotiations but wants them to be based on negotiated authorization and adequate compensation.
