Anthropic announced on Friday that it has disabled access to its artificial intelligence models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to comply with a U.S. government export control directive, which cited 'national security authorities.' The company received an order at 5:21 PM ET, requiring the suspension of access for all foreign citizens, including foreign employees of Anthropic. This measure was taken abruptly, although the models had recently been presented as state-of-the-art. Fable 5 marked a first for Anthropic, featuring advanced safety measures. The company limited the release of these models to a select group of companies as part of the Project Glasswing initiative. In its statement, Anthropic emphasized that the government did not provide specific details regarding national security concerns and apologized to customers for the disruption. This is not Anthropic's first confrontation with the U.S. government, considering the risk label for the supply chain imposed by the Department of Defense, which has led to ongoing litigation.
