The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that his country will be "technically ready" to join the European Union in 2027. This statement comes in the context of opposition expressed by European leaders, including Hungary, which opposes the accelerated integration of Ukraine. Luxembourg's Foreign Minister, Xavier Bettel, emphasized the need to respect EU rules and urged Zelensky not to pressure the Union regarding the accession timeline.

Although Zelensky stated that the necessary steps will be implemented by the end of 2026, the European Commission mentioned that Ukraine's progress in essential areas, such as combating corruption, is limited. Zelensky highlighted the importance of a "clear timeline" for accession as part of post-war security guarantees. At the same time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that the majority of Hungarians oppose Ukraine's rapid accession, citing the protection of farmers and national security. EU expansion requires unanimous approval from the 27 member states, which complicates the accession process.
