Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of attacking the cargo ship Royad Mammadov with two drones on Monday morning while it was in neutral waters off the coast of Romania. The vessel was carrying corn, was owned by a Turkish company and was flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Following the attack, the ship caught fire and later sank. Two crew members died, including the captain. Another 11 people were rescued by Romanian teams, three of them injured. The Coast Guard was alerted at around 11:00 a.m. after the fire was spotted approximately 30 nautical miles south of Sfântul Gheorghe, in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. A helicopter operated by the General Aviation Inspectorate evacuated the injured.
Zelensky called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia and argued that the attack demonstrates the growing risks in the Black Sea. In recent months, Romania has reported other incidents, including the destruction of a maritime drone by an F-16 aircraft and the explosion of a drone in the port of Constanța.
