Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia may have transferred to North Korea the technology used to develop jet-powered drones, amid intensifying Russian attacks on Ukraine. Asked by journalists whether Moscow had passed the technology to Pyongyang, Zelensky answered in the affirmative, according to Reuters.
In recent weeks, Russia has increased its use of jet-powered drones, which are more difficult to intercept with the Ukrainian capabilities currently available. Fighter aircraft are among the few systems capable of effectively shooting them down.
Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened their military cooperation since the beginning of the war. North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery shells and ballistic missiles, while thousands of North Korean troops have been sent to Russia, where they have gained combat experience.
In return, Western countries and South Korea fear that Pyongyang is receiving advanced military technologies. Relations between Seoul and Kyiv have become strained after two North Korean soldiers captured while fighting for Russia were transferred to South Korea. Zelensky says the transfer was carried out at the request of the South Korean authorities.
