The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, had a meeting of approximately 30 minutes with Pope Leo XIV at Castel Gandolfo, during his official visit to Italy. This discussion took place against the backdrop of Ukraine's efforts to strengthen international support, especially in the context of an American-Russian agreement project perceived as favorable to Moscow. After the meeting with the Sovereign Pontiff, Zelensky will also discuss with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. His visit follows intense consultations in London and Brussels, where he spoke with European leaders and NATO officials.
Pope Leo XIV reiterated the Vatican's support for Ukraine and the willingness to host peace negotiations. Zelensky mentioned that discussions with Washington are stalled on sensitive issues, and divisions persist in Brussels regarding the use of frozen Russian assets. Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, was recently in the USA to review cooperation plans with Washington.
