Xi Jinping arrived in Lhasa to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region, stressing the importance of maintaining political and social stability, ethnic unity and religious harmony. In his speech, he said Tibetan Buddhism must adapt to the Chinese socialist system. This is his second visit to Tibet as president, taking place against a background of tensions with India. The Chinese foreign minister also visited India to improve bilateral relations affected by border disputes.
