During the APEC summit in South Korea, Xi Jinping invited Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit China, signaling a thaw in the tense bilateral relations. This was the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries since 2017, in a context where both countries are seeking to strengthen their relations affected by the trade war initiated by Donald Trump.
Xi stated that China is willing to collaborate with Canada to restore Sino-Canadian relations. Relations deteriorated in 2018 after the arrest of a Huawei executive in Canada and the detention of two Canadians by Beijing. Recently, Canada imposed tariffs on Chinese oilseeds, and China responded with tariffs on Canadian canola. However, Canada is now seeking to draw closer to China to counteract the negative effects of Trump's trade policies, which threaten the Canadian economy. Carney emphasized the importance of open trade and mentioned that Canada is a major supplier of liquefied natural gas to Asia.
