The woman with the last name Li was caught red-handed at a funeral home in Hsinchu, Taiwan, after the family of the deceased man, Peng, reported her to the police due to her suspicious behavior. Li had previous financial disputes with Peng and, after learning of his death, showed up at the funeral home with a fake mortgage document and a promissory note worth 8.5 million NT$ (approximately 280,000 US dollars), claiming to be a close friend. During the ceremony, she was observed climbing onto the hearse and manipulating Peng's body to obtain his fingerprint. The police detained her and confiscated the forged documents.
Li admitted that she acted out of fear of not recovering the money she had borrowed from Peng. The court sentenced her to two years of probation, ordering her to pay a fine and perform community service. The incident sparked various reactions in Taiwan and across Asia, being considered a bizarre occurrence and a form of fraud.
