The state of West Virginia has filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of failing to prevent the storage and distribution of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) through iOS devices and iCloud services. Attorney General John 'JB' McCuskey claims that Apple has prioritized privacy and commercial interests at the expense of children's safety, in contrast to other technology companies that have implemented proactive solutions, such as PhotoDNA. Although Apple tested a CSAM detection system in 2021, it abandoned the implementation due to privacy-related criticisms. The lawsuit could force Apple to change its security policies, and the state is seeking punitive damages and effective CSAM detection solutions. Apple has responded that protecting users, especially children, is a priority, mentioning existing parental control features.
