Volkswagen has surpassed Tesla in total electric vehicle sales in Europe, according to JATO Dynamics data. In 2025, Volkswagen recorded a 56% increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, selling 274,278 units, while Tesla experienced a 27% decline, with 236,357 units sold.
Volkswagen's success is largely due to the new ID.7 model. Tesla is facing increasing competition from traditional European manufacturers and Chinese rivals, and Elon Musk's controversial policies have generated negative reactions from consumers. In 2025, electric vehicle registrations increased by 29% in Europe, while the total number of car registrations grew by only 2.3%. The top electric vehicle sales in Europe for 2025 include Volkswagen in first place, followed by Tesla and BMW.
