The threat of a domestic revolt has prompted Ursula von der Leyen to make financial concessions for poorer regions in her budget plan for the next seven years. She promised more money to maintain political balance in the commission and respond to criticism of regional disparities. While important funds have been retained, critics remain suspicious that the changes will allow central governments more influence over the distribution of these funds, which could deepen existing inequalities.
