Miroslav Jenca, the UN Under-Secretary-General, stressed at an emergency meeting that the expansion of Israeli military action in Gaza could lead to "catastrophic consequences". He reaffirmed that Gaza must remain an integral part of a future Palestinian state. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the goal was to completely defeat the enemy in Gaza and free the hostages.
