Amid growing pressures from the U.S., Ukrainians reaffirm their opposition to the territorial concessions requested by Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that such decisions should be made by the Ukrainian people, including through a referendum, although organizing one is prohibited during martial law. Many citizens believe that a referendum during wartime is unrealistic, given the security conditions. Polls show that about 75% of Ukrainians oppose the withdrawal of troops from the Donetsk region, and some argue that it is not the time for concessions under pressure. Zelensky also rejected the American proposal to create a 'free economic zone' in Donetsk, considering it unfair. Ukrainians are skeptical about any agreement with Russia, given Moscow's history of violating agreements.
