Serhii K., a Ukrainian suspect, is accused by German authorities of being part of a group responsible for planting explosive devices on the Nord Stream pipelines, near the Danish island of Bornholm, in the Baltic Sea. The explosions in 2022 caused significant damage to the pipelines, drastically reducing the flow of Russian gas to Europe and generating one of the most complex energy security investigations in recent years. The incident has been considered an act of sabotage by both Russia and Western states.
German prosecutors accuse Serhii K. of complicity in causing an explosion, sabotage against the constitutional order, and destruction of critical infrastructure. The suspect was detained in Italy in August and denies the charges, with his lawyer stating that he will be acquitted following the trial in Germany. Additionally, last month, a Polish court rejected Germany's request for the extradition of another Ukrainian suspect involved in the same case.
