Two commercial vessels were hit by drones on Tuesday in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, approximately 80 miles from the town of Byala, in the Varna region. The attacks prompted an emergency meeting in Sofia, attended by representatives of the Government, the Presidency, and the security services.
It is the first reported drone attack on vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. According to the authorities, the incident occurred as part of a coordinated attack, but no information was provided regarding those responsible.
One of the vessels, Alfa Watan, flying the Togolese flag, reportedly sank. The fate of the crew was not immediately known. Another vessel, Able, caught fire following the attacks, and all 18 crew members were rescued by the passenger vessel Dioscuria, flying the Bulgarian flag. The vessel Mercy, flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, also participated in the rescue operations.
The incident occurred one day after a Turkish vessel sank in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. The vessel, which was carrying grain from Ukraine to Italy, caught fire following an alleged drone attack. At that time, two people died, while another 11 were rescued.
