Rescuers were alerted on Monday evening, and a search team managed to locate two members of the group unharmed on Tuesday morning. Helicopters continued the search throughout the night, later finding the bodies of two other climbers. Detective Inspector Vicki Walker stated that the process of bringing the men home to their families can begin, thanking the rescue team for their efforts.
One of the climbers was an American citizen, and the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council confirmed that one of the deceased was a qualified mountain guide, respected in the community. Mount Cook is known for its dangers, including rockfalls and avalanches, having a tragic history among climbers.
