The aircraft carriers Liaoning and Shandong have been spotted operating near islands in southern Japan, marking a first in their simultaneous deployment. Japanese Minister Takeshi Iwaya said Japan had contacted Beijing to discuss the activities, saying the authorities would take appropriate action if necessary, but without explicitly condemning China's actions.
