The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced that Turkey is ready to provide assistance to the Syrian army in a counter-terrorism operation against Kurdish fighters in Aleppo, the main city in northern Syria. This statement comes following violent clashes between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters, which resulted in the deaths of 17 people, including 16 civilians.

The Turkish ministry emphasized that the security of Syria is a priority for Turkey and assured that the clashes were conducted exclusively by the Syrian army. These tensions occur in a broader context, where the Syrian government and Kurdish forces have failed to implement an agreement signed in March for the integration of the Kurdish autonomous administration into the structures of the Syrian state.

Turkey previously conducted significant military operations in Syria against Kurdish fighters between 2016 and 2019.
