On January 20, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran would be "wiped off the face of the Earth" if it attempted to assassinate him, in response to threats from a senior Iranian officer, General Abolfazl Shekarchi. Trump emphasized that he had given clear orders in this regard, in an interview with News Nation. Shekarchi's threat came in the context of Washington potentially targeting the life of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Trump also previously mentioned that he could intervene militarily to stop the repression of protests in Iran. Voices from the Iranian diaspora, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, have suggested actions against Khamenei. Trump further stated that shortly after taking office, he threatened with "annihilation" of Iran in the event of an attack against him.
