President Donald Trump signed a decree ordering the Pentagon to purchase electricity from coal-fired power plants, arguing that it is essential for national security.

The measure aims to secure long-term contracts for military bases, in the context of an offensive against renewable energies. Trump, known for his criticisms of green energy, considers coal a strategic solution for ensuring an uninterrupted supply to military installations.

Although coal provides one-third of global electricity, it is also a major source of CO2 emissions. Coal production in the U.S. has steadily declined in recent decades, being replaced by natural gas and renewable sources. In 2023, coal accounted for only 16% of the country's total electricity production.
