The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated on Wednesday that the death of a Russian employee of a laboratory specializing in epidemics does not appear to be connected to a biological weapon. The statement was made at the White House, amid reports of a possible second suspected case in Russia.
Asked by journalists whether he had information about the involvement of a biological weapon, Trump replied that U.S. authorities do not believe this is the reason for the death, but that the situation will be clarified soon.
The American president stated that Moscow claims the situation is under control, but noted that Russia has not provided much information so far. He compared the reaction of the Russian authorities with that of China before the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, when Beijing was criticized for its lack of transparency.
"They say that the situation is completely under control," the American president replied.
Russia warned that “false” information about the incident and the emergence of a second suspected case is circulating in the public sphere. The United States and the United Nations have asked Moscow to provide more data and communicate transparently. They are thus trying to establish whether there is an epidemiological risk or whether the published information was misinterpreted.
