President Donald Trump vehemently criticized a new clean energy agreement signed between California and the United Kingdom, calling Governor Gavin Newsom "a loser" and warning British leaders not to collaborate with him. In an interview with POLITICO, Trump stated that Newsom has brought California to the brink of disaster and that the agreement will have negative consequences for the United Kingdom. These comments came after Newsom signed a memorandum of understanding with British Secretary of State for Energy, Ed Miliband, to promote clean energy technologies, including offshore wind energy. The agreement aims to expand access for British firms to the California market and collaboration between research institutions. Newsom, a potential candidate for the presidency in 2028, traveled to Europe to assure U.S. allies that the changes in climate policy under the Trump administration are temporary. Trump emphasized that if the United Kingdom follows California's example under Newsom's leadership, this partnership will not be successful, also mentioning the infrastructure failures in California, such as the high-speed rail project.
