The WHO Director, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is heading to Tenerife to oversee the disembarkation of infected passengers from the MV Hondius.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, will visit the island of Tenerife, together with Spanish officials, to oversee the safe disembarkation of passengers and crew from the MV Hondius, expected to arrive on Sunday morning.

The WHO is monitoring the situation and will inform member states about its developments. Spain's Minister of Health, Monica Garcia, and the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, will join the WHO director to coordinate the disembarkation. Passengers infected with hantavirus will be taken to an isolated area.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, three people have died, and the USA and the UK have decided to evacuate citizens from the ship. Hantavirus spreads through rodent droppings, but cases of human-to-human transmission are rare. Symptoms can appear between one and eight weeks after exposure.
