Following the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. American authorities have identified at least six citizens who have come into contact with the virus, and one American is showing symptoms. The CDC has announced that it supports the evacuation of a small group of exposed Americans, but has not confirmed the exact number.
The Bundibugyo strain, responsible for the current outbreak, has no approved vaccines or treatments. Additionally, two confirmed cases and one death have been reported in Uganda. The U.S. government intends to transport this group to a quarantine location, possibly a military base in Germany. The WHO has warned that the outbreak could be much more widespread and has recommended strict public health measures in the affected regions.
