In the last five months, the U.S. has borrowed 50 billion dollars per week, accumulating a federal deficit of 1 trillion dollars in fiscal year 2026. The Treasury has spent 433 billion dollars on public debt service, which has risen to nearly 38.9 trillion dollars. Interest expenses have increased due to higher debt and elevated yields. Although the deficit is smaller compared to last year, experts are calling for stricter budget discipline. Maya MacGuineas, president of the CRFB, emphasized the need to reduce deficits and stabilize the national debt. Government revenues have increased, but spending has risen significantly, especially for social programs.
