On Thursday, over half a million candidates from South Korea took the university entrance exam, a crucial event for obtaining a place at top higher education institutions. The police were mobilized to ensure the transportation of candidates, and all flights were suspended for 35 minutes to avoid noise during the English test. The total number of 554,174 registered individuals represents a 6% increase compared to the previous year and is the highest since 2019, reflecting a rise in birth rates since 2007. The exam, which lasts nine hours, is considered essential in a competitive society, and financial markets and offices opened later to allow all candidates to arrive on time. South Korea is facing a rapid aging of its population, despite a slight increase in the birth rate.
