The United Kingdom announced on Monday the expulsion of a Russian diplomat, an action considered a gesture of reciprocity after Russia expelled a British diplomat, accusing him of espionage. The British Foreign Office described Russia's accusations as 'unfounded' and the expulsion of the British diplomat as 'unprovoked and unjustified.'
During the meeting with the Russian ambassador, British officials emphasized that the United Kingdom will not tolerate intimidation of its diplomatic staff and has taken appropriate measures. In the context of the tensions generated by the war in Ukraine, both Russia and the West have accused each other of intensified espionage, and Western diplomats in Moscow have complained of harassment.
The United Kingdom warned Russia that any subsequent action will be considered an escalation, and the response will be proportionate. The Russian Embassy in London has not yet commented on the situation.
