The partner of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, Begona Gómez, has been officially charged with corruption, following a two-year investigation, according to a court ruling published on Monday. Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has indicted her for embezzlement, influence peddling, bribery, and misappropriation of public funds, in the context of an investigation targeting the use of her status as the Prime Minister's partner to gain personal advantages. The case focuses on the establishment of a chair at the Complutense University of Madrid, co-directed by Gómez, and the alleged use of public resources for private purposes. While Begona Gómez, currently on a visit to China, denies the allegations, Pedro Sánchez considers them an attempt at destabilization by the right-wing opposition. The case was initiated by a complaint from an anti-corruption group linked to the far-right, and the Prime Minister's brother, David Sánchez, is also involved in another influence peddling case. This situation further complicates the position of his minority coalition government.
