The ruling coalition in Japan has achieved a historic victory in the general elections, giving Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi a supermajority of two-thirds. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won 316 of the 465 seats in the House of Representatives, its best performance since 1955. This victory has led to a significant increase in Japanese stocks, signaling a clear political and economic direction. Takaichi, who took over the leadership of the LDP after Shigeru Ishiba's resignation, stated that the election results provide a strong mandate to implement controversial economic and security policies. Although she promised to suspend the 8% sales tax on food, concerns about funding this measure persist. Relations with China have become tense, with Takaichi adopting a nationalist and security-focused approach, leading to disputes with Beijing. International reactions were swift, including a congratulatory message from U.S. President Donald Trump, who highlighted Takaichi's popularity and respect.
