The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with Google to expand the use of the generative artificial intelligence model Gemini in classified operations. This decision comes after Google will replace the Claude model from Anthropic, which was the only one previously authorized for such operations.

In February, the Trump administration terminated contracts with Anthropic and subsequently collaborated with OpenAI for the integration of its models, a process that will take several months. Additionally, the startup xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has reached a similar agreement with the Pentagon. Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon's artificial intelligence chief, emphasized that diversifying suppliers is essential.

The agreement with Google provides the Department of Defense with more freedom of action compared to the previous contract with Anthropic, which imposed strict restrictions. However, over 600 Google employees have urged management not to collaborate with the U.S. military for classified operations, recalling the withdrawal from the Maven project in 2018.
