The Kremlin rejected the accusations made by the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, which claim that Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was poisoned in prison with epibatidine, a toxin derived from a tree frog. The Kremlin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, stated that these accusations are biased and unfounded. On February 14, the five countries issued a joint statement, asserting that only the Russian government could have poisoned Navalny.

Additionally, the United Kingdom announced that it would refer the matter to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, considering that Russia has violated international conventions. Navalny died on February 16, 2024, at the age of 47, in a prison in the Arctic Circle, leaving the opposition without its charismatic leader. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the report as disturbing but noted that the United States is not a signatory to the joint statement.
