The expiration of the New START treaty, the last nuclear arms control agreement between the USA and Russia, has raised fears about a new arms race. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the seriousness of the situation and called for immediate negotiations for a new agreement. The treaty, signed in 2010, limited the number of nuclear warheads and ensured transparency between the two powers. Without this agreement, Guterres warned that there are no limits to nuclear arsenals, increasing the risk of their use.

Russia suspended the treaty three years ago, and now, Russian officials claim they no longer feel bound by its provisions. In contrast, American President Donald Trump stated that he is not worried and that he will seek a better agreement. The expiration of New START joins other abandoned treaties, amplifying the risks of nuclear proliferation. Expert Daria Dolzikova mentioned that both countries are modernizing their arsenals, complicating the prospects for a new treaty. In conclusion, the expiration of New START heralds an unstable and dangerous period in international relations.
