The European Union has announced a drastic 47% reduction in tariff quotas for imports of steel, allowing tax-free exports of up to 18.3 million tons annually. Tariffs will be doubled to 50% for imports that exceed these quotas. The United Kingdom, already affected by difficulties in the steel industry, fears the devastating impact of these measures, considering that 80% of its exports go to the EU. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has initiated discussions with the EU and the US to address this issue.
