The European Commission will present on Thursday a military plan that provides for EU countries to prepare for war in the next five years, aiming to strengthen European defense by 2030. The project emphasizes the need for a credible defense posture to deter adversaries and respond to aggressions, in the context of persistent threats from Russia. Although the defense budgets of member states are increasing, the document highlights fragmentation and lack of interoperability, calling for 40% of defense acquisitions to be common by 2027.

The plan establishes priorities in new critical areas, including air defense, military mobility, and cyber defense. Projects must be launched by 2026, and the Commission hopes to mobilize up to 800 billion euros for defense spending. Although member states retain sovereignty, there is reluctance regarding the increased role of the EU in defense. The plan underscores the importance of coordination with NATO and addresses concerns related to global threats, aiming for a more independent Europe in an increasingly dangerous international environment.
