The unstable foreign policy of the Trump administration has raised concerns in Europe regarding cooperation with Washington in the field of intelligence. John Ratcliffe, the CIA director, made a discreet visit to Brussels, where he met with high-ranking EU officials, including Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat. The purpose of the meeting was to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to information sharing, in the context where some European capitals express fears regarding the direction of U.S. foreign policy under President Trump.
Frequent changes in American policy, such as the abrupt halt of information sharing with Ukraine, have affected European trust in Washington's reliability. Ratcliffe, known as a fervent supporter of Trump, emphasized the importance of maintaining open channels of communication. The discussions included common challenges such as Russia and China, and the meeting was seen as a step towards strengthening a joint EU intelligence operation, in the context where European services are re-evaluating information sharing agreements with the U.S.
