The Australian internet regulatory authority has announced that it has initiated legal action against the messaging platform Telegram, accused of failing to take measures against terrorist content.

The online safety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, stated that Telegram has not removed video materials related to extreme violence acts, including the terrorist attacks in Christchurch and Buffalo. Non-compliance with regulations can result in fines of up to 54.6 million Australian dollars. Telegram has rejected the accusations, claiming that it has blocked thousands of extremist communities and that it will contest the allegations in court.

Between July and October 2025, users in Australia reported 12 messages with terrorist content, of which 10 were not removed. Telegram, with over a billion active users monthly, has become an important platform for information related to the war in Ukraine and is used by officials from both sides. Recently, Russian authorities accused founder Pavel Durov of facilitating terrorist activities.
