The American ambassador to the Czech Republic, Whitaker, sent a clear message on social media platform X, emphasizing that all allies must respect the defense commitments made in The Hague, including allocating 5% of GDP for defense by 2035. This message comes following the adoption of a revised budget by the Czech government, which reduced the allocation for the Ministry of Defense to 1.73% of GDP, below NATO's target of 2%.

Recent political changes, with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's ANO party in power, have generated controversy regarding military aid to Ukraine and commitments to NATO. Babiš stated that the 5% target is unrealistic and that his government will prioritize other areas, such as health. The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, warned that reducing military spending could affect allies' trust, but it will not block the budget.
