Waldemar Zurek, the Polish Minister of Justice, harshly criticized the leadership of Hungary, stating that Prime Minister Viktor Orban is closer to Russia than to the European Union. This statement comes following a dispute between Poland and Hungary, in which Zurek mentioned that Budapest is protecting two former Polish officials accused of embezzlement. He emphasized that Orban is blocking funds intended for Poland to support Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion and accused Hungary of wanting to destabilize the EU from within.
Orban, on the other hand, rejected the accusations, claiming that his relations with Russia are in Hungary's national interest. The tensions between the two states are amplified by the situation of former Polish Minister of Justice, Zbigniew Ziobro, who is in Hungary and may seek asylum, citing a lack of a fair trial in Poland. Zurek warned that Poland may have to bring this issue before European forums, emphasizing that Hungary is violating the rules of the European Arrest Warrant.
