The Swiss President Guy Parmelin adopted a conciliatory tone in response to the criticisms from the Italian government regarding the release on bail of the owner of the bar in Crans-Montana, Jacques Moretti, involved in the fire that resulted in 40 deaths, including six Italians. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Parmelin acknowledged the Italian anger but emphasized the differences between the judicial systems of the two countries.
He stated that the intervention of politicians in justice is unacceptable, highlighting the importance of the separation of powers. The criticisms from Italy have been harsh, with Rome considering the court's decision an affront to the families of the victims. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reacted by recalling the Italian ambassador to Switzerland and proposed the formation of a joint investigation team.
