American actress Susan Sarandon was detained by New York police on Thursday while a demonstration against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was being dispersed. The protest took place as Netanyahu was preparing to address the United Nations General Assembly.
Images released by AFP show the actress handcuffed by police officers. According to the New York Post, actress Hannah Einbinder, known for her role in the series “Hacks,” was also removed from the demonstration.
The protest was organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace group. Participants occupied an intersection and displayed messages such as “Stop Arming Israel” and “End the Genocide.”
The New York Police Department said the intervention targeted an unpermitted demonstration that was blocking traffic. Officers reportedly asked protesters to leave the area, but several people refused and were taken into custody. The NYPD did not specify the exact number of people detained.
Susan Sarandon regularly participates in protests against Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The actress recently said that she had lost contracts because of her public positions on Israel. She is known for her roles in “Thelma & Louise,” “Dead Man Walking,” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
