Germany's Social Democratic Party has passed a motion to ban the far-right AfD, citing its classification as a confirmed far-right group.

At its national congress, the SPD called on constitutional bodies to initiate proceedings to declare the AfD unconstitutional. SPD Co-President Lars Klingbeil stressed that there was no room for maneuver in the face of the threat posed by right-wing extremism. The AfD, known for its anti-immigration and nationalist stances, has grown in influence and is now the largest opposition party. The move comes after the Office for the Protection of the Constitution reclassified the AfD as a confirmed far-right group, allowing for extensive scrutiny, although the classification is legally challenged. The SPD, which lost ground in the election, is part of a coalition with the CDU-CSU.
