Edmundo Gonzalez, under indictment in Venezuela, took refuge in Spain, where he was recognized as president-elect by the lower house of the Spanish parliament. The move prompted a harsh reaction from the Venezuelan government, which called for diplomatic relations with Spain to be severed. The Spanish prime minister stressed that his country would continue to demand the publication of the detailed Venezuelan vote count.
