Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, stated that the United States has several legal tools to maintain the tariff policy of the Trump administration, even if the Supreme Court decides against it in the case regarding the legality of the new imposed tariffs. The Court will hear arguments regarding Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose extensive tariffs. Bessent emphasized that, although IEEPA provides the president with the greatest negotiating power, there are also other legal options, such as Section 232 and Section 301, which allow for the imposition of tariffs for national security reasons and to combat unfair trade practices. Bessent also mentioned the progress in relations with China, highlighting the mutual respect demonstrated following the recent meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping. Two state visits are planned for 2026, one in Beijing and the other in the U.S.
