Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, stated that Donald Trump's return to the presidency of the USA had a positive impact on the Alliance, forcing European countries to increase their defense spending. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Rutte emphasized that without the pressure exerted by Trump, major European economies such as Spain, Italy, and France would not have agreed to allocate 2% of GDP for defense.

This increase in military budgets was accelerated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Rutte mentioned that, although the USA remains involved in European defense, it is logical for them to focus more on Asia. Additionally, NATO countries have set a new defense spending target of 5% of GDP by 2035, an initiative initially supported by Trump.
