American authorities, including the FBI and CISA, have issued a warning regarding the compromise of thousands of accounts on messaging applications such as Signal and WhatsApp, including those of government officials, military personnel, politicians, and journalists.
Russian hackers pose as official support teams and send messages warning about suspicious authentication attempts, asking users to send verification codes or access malicious links. After obtaining the code, the attackers take control of the account, blocking the legitimate user and extending the attack through phishing messages to the victim's contacts.
The American alert comes after similar reports from Europe, where security services in Portugal and the Netherlands have reported attacks on officials. The FBI and CISA recommend that users be cautious with messages from unknown accounts and activate available security features. Signal representatives emphasize that official teams never ask for verification codes via messages.
