Wärtsilä has developed an innovative technology based on an engine that operates exclusively on hydrogen, having the potential to contribute to balancing renewable energy systems without carbon emissions. This world premiere was tested at a facility in northern Spain and addresses the challenge of providing electricity when wind and solar sources are insufficient.

Unlike hydrogen fuel cells, the engine uses an internal combustion system adapted for pure hydrogen, and Wärtsilä representatives suggest that multiple units could be combined to create industrial power plants capable of generating hundreds of megawatts.

However, experts warn that the widespread use of hydrogen requires significant investments in infrastructure and stronger political support, in the context of expanding renewable energy in Spain.
